R.I.P. Blacky

After 18 wonderful years, my beloved cat Blacky passed away yesterday. I remember the day I first met him, back in Florence KY. We’d just moved into the house on Trophy Court and a cat that we’d seen while we were checking out the house had since then had her kittens right under our back deck. It was winter and getting colder by the day. They were all pressed against the house, trying to stay warm, but eventually the moaning got too loud and we called the SPCA to help us get them out. They got the mom and 4 of her kittens…but one black one stayed behind. My dad and I tried for a couple more hours that evening to convince him to come out from under the deck and he finally did. We brought him inside, warmed him up a bit, and then asked my mom if we could keep him. He was small enough to fit into the palms of my hands. We weren’t very original with naming him Blacky, but he very quickly became an integral part of our family. He was free to roam anywhere in our house (never on the bed or couch though ), and the woods in our back yard. Before my dad went to bed each night, he’d call for Blacky and there he came, running up the deck steps and into the house. Every night.

Over the past years, he’s gotten used to living in FL and being more of an inside cat. He loved to play, never liked the vet much, “talked” to the birds outside his window, and laid next to my dad every evening as they watched the news together. Blacky was our fourth family member for 18 years and we will miss him so much. I only wish he could have held on for me to give him a hug when we go to FL, but I know he’s in cat heaven now, and we will always keep him in our hearts.

Tina, you know how much I love animals and I know the tremendous saddness one experiences when of their dear little friends moves on. Only a pet can truly give you unconditional love…so strings attached…just love. I feel for ya baby….

I’m so sorry to hear about Blacky. I always enjoyed asking you about what Blacky was up to and how he was doing when you made your visits to Florida. Don’t worry though. Yankee will show Blacky the ropes up in kitty heaven.

18 years, wow. that’s 18 more than if you would have not taken him inside. RIP blacky.
