First Pitch

Published by admin at 9:30 am under The Industry

Last night was First Pitch 2007, the sixth annual event sponsored by USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and organized by its Writing Division students to provide graduating seniors and MFAs the chance to pitch their stories to industry folk in hopes of getting a leg up as they head out the door. It was my MFA class that organized the very first First Pitch, and it was wonderful to see how it’s grown into a fabulous event held at the Four Seasons.

I went in support of my six graduating seniors (Scott, Marcy, James, Jenny, Alex, and Kevin), and to visit with faculty and fellow 2002 alums present for the event. Moira is now the administrator of the Writing Division (and has had her script Wrigleyville produced), John is the film’s school’s chief communications officer, Aaron was one of the official hosts of the event and is now a writer on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, and I was there for the free food and drink. Fun times.

This podcast of The Business features a five-minute segment about First Pitch at the very end of the show. My student, Alex, is featured prominently in the story. Good luck to the class of 2007.
